Abstract: | This article and a sequel attempt to present an overview of gender differences in the Canadian economy over the past half century, with somewhat greater emphasis on recent years, with the larger American economy as a basis of comparison. Accordingly, issues such as the amount of labour force participation, earnings, “poverty rates,” and unemployment experienced will be surveyed. In Part I, labour force questions, such as participation and unemployment, are studied; the sequel will discuss earnings related issues, including the allocation of time. |
