| Abstract: |
Trade unions played an important role in reducing the level of poverty in Canada from two-thirds of Canadians before 1941 to 15% by 1971. They helped establish social programs from health care to education and advanced human rights. But now the level of poverty is back up to 23% and the drive to cut taxes is seen as a drive to shrink medicare and education programs. Speech to the Convention of the Canadian Districts of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Mississauga, September 14, 1999. |
