Abstract: |
The inextricable links between the well-being of people in rich countries such as Canada, and the poor in the world’s developing nations, must be more clearly and widely recognized. The enormous gap between the rich and the poor nations threatens global security, environmental devastation, floods of immigrants, and terrorism. The rich nations also suffer economically, from the loss of trade, income and employment opportunities. The rich-poor gap has widened ominously during the past decade, while foreign aid to developing countries is now curtailed by economic recession, by massive public debts in the rich countries, and the need to help the nations of the collapsed Soviet bloc. Addressing issues of poverty, the environmental and human rights on a global basis – in rich countries as well as poor – is advocated. |
